On Monday, 7th March 2016, a National Flag Presentation ceremony for post-primary schools at Croke Park Stadium in the presence of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. This was a State ceremony in association with the Thomas F. Meagher Foundation, at which 780 post-primary schools were presented with the National Flag & a commemorative folder with a copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic in the Centenary year of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Easter Sunday Commemoration Parade 2016

On Sunday the 27th March Easter Sunday, the 100th anniversary State Ceremony Parade was held across the streets of Dublin. It consists of two distinct elements: the Defence Forces-Óglaigh na hÉireann-the Irish United Nations Veterans Association and the Organisation of Ex Service Men & Women. The Blue Lights Brigade was also represented along with An Garda Siochchana, Dublin Fire Brigade & the Civil Defence. In total some 3,500 personnel participated along with 70 vehicles were involved to showcase the military and civil capability of all the participating organizations.

 

The parade consisted of eight Serials (Marching elements), a massed Air Corps fleet flypast and a 21-gun salute from the 2nd Artillery Regiment.

Laochra

The GAA Commemorates 1916

Laochra, produced by Tyrone productions, was a celebration of the wealth of Irish culture through the ages. With over 3,000 people partricpating, Laochra encapsulated and celebrated a spirit of inclusion. People came from across the island of Ireland and from the Diaspora abroad to take part, including some of Ireland’s finest musicians, singers, dancers, actors, sports stars and performers. At the end of the performance the Audience were invited to take part, sing and create the largest single expression of the Irish flag ever manifested in a live Theatrical event.

National Famine Commemoration 2016

The 2016 National Famine Commemoration took place on Sunday, 11th September at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.  The Event was led by President Michael D. Higgins who unveiled a Celtic Cross donated by the Glasnevin Trust to act as a permanent memorial to the victims of the Famine.  

 

Minister Heather Humphreys T.D. the Chairperson of the National Famine Commemoration Committee thanked John Green Chairman of the Glasnevin Trust not only for their hosting of the ceremony, but also for providing the permanent memorial to the victims of the Famine, unveiled by President Higgins.

Culture Night 2016

Presented by RTE in partnership with Department of Arts, Heritage, Dublin City Council and the Office of Public Works who produced the event. 

 

To celebrate this special centenary year, Dublin Castle was transformed for Culture Night, filling its historic walls with music, theatre and words. Visitors of all ages explored the staggering open-air concert and myriad of workshops, talks and readings dotted throughout this majestic building and its surrounds including Dubh Linn Gardens and the Chester Beatty Library.

RTÉ brought the magic and vibrancy of Culture Night to homes around the country, on television, radio, online and mobile.
